I have been a fan of the Mickey Rawlings mystery series and have read every entry in the series. I was very happy to finally see another installment created by Troy Soos and downloaded it to my Kindle as soon as I discovered it. It wasn't a disappointing read at all but I wouldn't say it was the best in the series either. The characters and story line worked fine for me and held my interest just as the others have but I felt it was a bit rushed as if Mr. Soos was just trying to get to the end of his story quicker this time. I didn't get the same feel for the history of the time in his description of the settings for this story and that left me a bit disappointed as the historical settings were really a highlight to me in the past. Hanging Curve, for instance, was a true classic and I found myself fascinated by the descriptions of life in that time period as I read it. Not quite there in The Tomb That Ruth Built. Now, I do hope that Mr. Soos continues with the Mickey Rawlings series as I really do enjoy his character and look forward to Mr. Soos historical research on the era covered in the series. There are definite hints in this book that the series may continue although with Mickey Rawlings in a slightly different capacity (won't give details for those who haven't read the book yet). I just hope that Mr. Soos goes back to the deeper involvement of historical/cultural feel of the era covered in these stories in his next writing. Still, a very good read and entertaining baseball mystery novel.Product details

Great descriptive writing. Troy's strong vocabulary and descriptive ability brings you back in time to the opening of Yankee Stadium. Along the way you experience the personal journey of the more typical professional baseball career. Mickey Rawlings tries to cling to a less than stellar baseball career by scratching out every opportunity to remain in the game. Including, the request of the Yankee organization to discreetly look into the murder of a former player found within the confines of a brand new stadium. Was it a sabotage attempt against the organization or just an opportunity to dispose of a body? Your attention is held by the mystery of the murder, the career of a utility player and the personal life of several characters both famous and average.
It's a fun read for anyone who likes baseball, baseball history, the 1920s, and murder mysteries. The main character is likable and engaging. We get some interesting glimpses of Babe Ruth in his prime, both in and out of the spotlight. He is depicted as I would imagine him actually being -- larger than life but still human.
I enjoyed the book enough that I will check out some of the others in the series, but not enough that I am in a hurry.
So I am catching up with the entirety of Mr Soos's series and just wanted to say how I have enjoyed watching Mr. Rawlings grow and mature with the author's skill as a writer. I simply like the characters. It doesn't hurt that I was a Yankee's fan growing up in Wyoming, but our main character in this book simply gets better, deeper and more insightful. When the next book in this series comes out I will buy and read. And I find the game more interesting to watch since the author has provided me a clearer lens through which to watch this infinite strategy called baseball.
This is a solid entry in the Rawlings series. My favorite aspect of Troy's books are his period touches, and 1923 New York is a great setting for this type of story. It's also hard to find a better supporting character than Babe Ruth, and Troy weaves him into the story with panache, bringing his large persona to life without resorting to caricature. (I think my favorite scene is an uncharacteristically quiet evening shared between Mickey and the Babe.) A feud between Yankee ownership and visits to Prohibition-era speakeasies are among the details that bring the story to life. Troy also throws in a short crossover with another series he wrote set in the same period which I'm thinking of looking into now. My only complaint is the book is a little short. Oh, and it's clear that Mickey is too far into the backside of his career to play for all 16 teams from the era at this point. )
Troy Soos takes us back to 1923 in his latest Mickey Rawlings baseball mystery. Rawlings is a utility infielder who seems to go from team to team while finding murders to solve on each team. In this book, Mr. Soos places Rawlings on the 1923 New York Yankees, and the Yankees are moving into the new Yankee Stadium, the House that Ruth Built. But very soon a bootlegger is found dead in the concrete of the new structure. Rawlings is enlisted to help find the killer, but quietly, so the reputation of the Yankees and the new stadium won’t be damaged.
Mr. Soos started writing the Mickey Rawlings series in the 1990’s, and just in recent years the earlier books of the series have been re-issued and he has added to the series. He does a great job of combining baseball and historical fiction, and the result is an entertaining series of baseball mysteries. I highly recommend this book and the others in the Mickey Rawlings series. Here’s hoping that Mr. Soos continues this series!
Like Ben Zobrist, Mickey Rawlings is a utility player. Like Zobrist, Rawlings' wife is a performer, and like Zobrist, Rawlings is good
at something besides baseball. "The Tomb That Ruth Built" has vivid period description, believable baseball, engaging characters and intriguing mystery. It's good all the way through, and I loved the last line.
Let me start by saying that I am a fan of the Mickey Rawlings series by Troy Soos. I have read every book in the series with pleasure. Soos takes me back to a time when baseball was truly "the national pastime" and ballplayers were men who played a boys game for fun, owners were evil, and fans fervent and raucous. There's nothing complex about the writing staskedyle, the character development, or the plots, but they all fit together for a delightful step back to a simpler time. Best of all, Soos gives us a chance to meet the baseball heroes only read about and depicts them as they probably were. Simple man playing a game that they enjoyed. There is no pretense here, just an evening of fun (and the mystery isn't bad either.)
